UN Secretary-General H.E. Ban Ki-moon

Message from UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon
on the World Summit on the Information Society

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) brought UN organizations and programmes together around a common goal: bringing the great potential of information and communication technologies to all the world’s people.

The WSIS outcome assigned the UN system key tasks in this effort.  Indeed, the magnitude of the issues involved -- and their continuous evolution -- makes coordination even more challenging and all the more important.

The UN Group on the Information Society (UNGIS) has an important role to play as we move ahead.
UNGIS’s terms of reference give it a broad mandate to promote policy and programme coordination and coherence, and to provide overall guidance to the UN system in this area.

The challenge now is to structure UNGIS’s work, and to move ahead in a spirit of mutual learning, common purpose and partnership.  I wish the Group every success in providing an example of effective UN cooperation and in achieving the vital goals of the WSIS process.
